M R Hayden

M R Hayden is an Adjunct Assistant Professor working at the Department of Family and Community Medicine, University of Missouri School of Medicine. He is very interested in the role of amylin and islet amyloid polypeptide in type 2 diabetes mellitus, and is currently studying the morphology of atherosclerotic plaques from patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus who have died suddenly of a heart attack. He is also continuing to work with animal models of diabetes to more fully understand the process of redox stress and the role it plays in remodeling of the target organs in diabetes.

What prompted you to submit a paper to one of BioMed Central's Open Access journals?

I decided to publish our papers in an open access journal to increase the visibility of our work and in order to share our results with as many people as possible.

What was your assessment of the electronic submission and peer review process?

The submission process was seamless and easy to follow, making the review process and time to publication much faster. It is exciting to see your work published sooner rather than later.

What do you think you gained from publishing in an open access journal?

Firstly, high visibility! Open Access articles in BioMed Central are indexed in PubMed within 3-5 days and this increased the visibility of our research to people from all over the world.

Secondly, it has allowed us to share ideas and experiences with others from all over the globe, and to make many new friends in our field of study.

Most importantly, our research is free to those who wish to read it and there is a link from PubMed directly to the full-text of the article. Also, we have been impressed that our articles can be viewed on PubMed Central.
